Dr. Dunstana R. Melo
Dr. Dunstana R. Melo is Head of the Dosimetry Group of the Institute of Radiological Protection and Dosimetry (IRD), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
She has a Ph.D. in Biophysics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
Dr. Melo worked in dose assessment at the IRD in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the National Cancer Institute, in Bethesda, USA. She gained special experience as radiation dosimetry expert in the emergency situation during the cesium-137 incident that occurred in Goiania, Brazil in 1987.
Dr. Melo was appointed to participate in several Task Groups of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). She also served as a consultant for the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) on uncertainties in internal radiation dose assessment, and for UNSCEAR on occupational exposure to ionizing radiation between 2001 and 2008.
She is a member of the Brazilian Radiological Protection Association.
Dr. Melo has been participating in UNSCEAR since 1999, first as a member of the Brazilian delegation and then as Representative of Brazil from 2005 to 2007, and for its fifty-ninth session (2012).
