Professor Dr. Krishna B. Sainis
Dr. Krishna B. Sainis is Director of the Bio-Medical Group, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Professor of Life Sciences at the Homi Bhabha National Institute, both Mumbai, India.
After obtaining his M.Sc. degree in Biochemistry from the University of Pune, he completed a one-year orientation course in Biology-Radiobiology at BARC in 1972 and joined its Medical Division as a Scientific Officer. He obtained a PhD degree in Biophysics from the University of Pune in 1980. Dr. Sainis worked as post-doc on the regulation of autoimmunity at the New England Medical Centre, Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, USA. He also obtained an IAEA fellowship to carry out research at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund's Tumor Immunology Unit, University College London, UK.
Dr. Sainis was holding various positions at BARC, such as Head of the Immunology Section, Head of the Cell Biology Division and Associate Director of the Bioscience Group. In January 2006, he took over as Director of the Bio-Medical Group, where he has been coordinating the research and development activities of six divisions including the Radiation Medicine Centre and Medical Division. He also oversees the studies on the biological and health effects of high level natural radiation on human population in Kerala.
Dr. Sainis was awarded with several prizes by the Indian National Academy of Science, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Medical Sciences and the Indian Nuclear Society for his scientific contributions. He also worked as an IAEA expert and, since 2009, he has been a member of the IAEA Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Applications (SAGNA). He has recently been designated Chairman, SAGNA for 2012.
Dr. Sainis is the Representative of India to UNSCEAR since 1999.
