Dr. Yasuhito Sasaki

Yasuhito Sasaki, M.D., Ph.D., was Chairman for the 52nd (2004) and 53rd (2005) sessions.  He was Japan's Representative to UNSCEAR between 1997 and 2006.

Dr. Sasaki received his initial education in Japan.  For more than 30 years, Dr. Sasaki has practised nuclear medicine in some of the most prestigious medical centres in both Japan and the United States.  He is an active member of the international radiation and nuclear medicine community.  He has held numerous executive positions in the Japanese Society of Nuclear Medicine and other professional societies in Japan, the World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology, the European Association of Nuclear Medicine, as well as Editor of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine, and the Journal of Radiation Medicine.

Dr. Sasaki has received many awards and distinction for his contribution to nuclear medicine.  He was the first nuclear medicine physician from outside North America to receive the President's Distinguished Service Award from the American Society of Nuclear Medicine.  He has been recognized for his dedication to the profession of nuclear medicine, his tireless efforts to promote the use of nuclear medicine for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, and his devotion to the global nuclear medicine community and its continuing evolution.

Dr. Sasaki was the President of Japan's National Institute of Radiological Sciences and continues his activities as a teacher and writer on issues related to nuclear medicine and radiology. Between 2001 and 2009 he was also a member of the Main Commission of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and previously (1993-2001) a member of ICRP's Committee 3.
