Dr. Yoshiharu Yonekura
Dr. Yoshiharu Yonekura has been President of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), Chiba, Japan, since 2006. He is Member of the Science Council of Japan, and Professor Emeritus at the University of Fukui.
Dr. Yonekura received his MD in 1973 and PhD in Medical Sciences in 1980, both from Kyoto University. After he was trained in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the Kyoto University Hospital, he was engaged in scientific and clinical activities in the field of Nuclear Medicine and positron emission tomography (PET) as Faculty member of Kyoto University (1980-1995). In 1995 he moved to Fukui as Professor of Biomedical Imaging Research Center at University of Fukui, and conducted various research projects related to brain science and tumor diagnosis.
Dr. Yonekura has been a member of Committee 3 of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) since 2005, and led the task group on radiological protection in ion beam radiotherapy. He served as Chair of the Radiation Protection Committee at the Nuclear Safety Commission in Japan and Sub-Chair of the Radiation Council.
Dr. Yonekura has been the representative of Japan to UNSCEAR since 2007, and served as Rapporteur (sixtieth session) and Vice-Chair (sixty-first session).
